Joshua Chambers is facing a catharsis when he learns that 14 of his friends have perished in a tragic blaze. In an attempt to make sense of his life, Joshua returns to his earliest memory, sitting in a stroller in his dad’s orthopedic shoe store being adored by a customer who teaches him about trust and love. Joshua then traces the forty significant events that created the person he is today.
Joshua travels from the purity of his grade school love, Cathy, to a more mature relationship later in life with Chris. Their discussions challenge conventional beliefs and Josh discovers that there is an authentic power in allowing one’s body, mind and spirit to find its own balance.
From his fraternity days to an African Baptism with incredible interpretations of “God,” his talks with Valentino, who is dying from AIDS, and his brief stint in jail, Joshua constantly grows and evolves. Everything leads to an inevitable triumph of the human spirit when Joshua dances in heaven as a conscious vibration.
Enigma portrays philosophy, spirituality and sexuality as they actually exist in the present day.

If parents want to know how their sons live through their youths and come out better men, this book is reassuring.Sometimes serious, often funny, you’ll find yourself laughing as Josh, our hero, takes you on a journey of growth. In the 1980’s the growth becomes more painful. Losses fueled by relocations, aging and death pile onto an already questing character as he embraces life, reluctantly some days and eagerly the next.
The philosophy is sound. The graphic descriptions hit you in the gut, whether it’s a crazy exploit or a serious scene many readers will never have to experience. Warts and all, Enigma is a magical passage to adulthood.

Enigma Discovering the Moments that Form Your Life edition by Charles Stoll Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I found this book to be in the existential space as much as spiritual and to be honest, this book was a bit out of my comfort zone. By that, I don’t mean that I found it hard to read; but hard to review. It took some time for me to collect my thoughts. Though the book is the story about one person, each chapter was about a different time and juncture in his life. With different cast of characters, some making an appearance more frequently in the book while there are others we don’t hear of again. I guess that’s how real life works, not everyone is meant to be a constant or recurring presence. This gave the book a disparate vibe at times. I guess that’s why there are some chapters I liked, some I didn’t connect to, some which stuck to my head, while others were forgettable.
I think some of my favourite chapters were earlier ones. Maybe because I had more patience and understanding towards a confused teen or twenty year old. I found it hard to sympathize with him as he got older, couldn’t understand why he wasted away the privilege of being educated by not trying hard enough to get a skilled job.
There are a lot cool quotes, especially in the first half of the book.I liked the fact that it never got too preachy or self-indulgent. But what didn’t work for me is that, the book never got going as a conventional coming-of-age story of a teen searching for spiritual awakening. The two factors didn’t mesh together too well. But if you are in the mood for a slow-burning book, with thoughtful chapters that you would like to revisit later on, then this just might be the book for you.
I got this book via @Booktips_tweet in exchange for an honest review.

Great book to read! It was very enjoyable and easy to read. The journeys of real life. Can't wait to read the next book!
I thought it was a wonderful, poignant, heartwarming story of the coming to terms with your inner self and inner demons. The characters were real to life. The journey in itself was inspiring, funny, sad, and tender. I recommend this book highly.
This book kept me glued to each page ...it really gives you food for thought...a very good read.
it was a very well written story of enlightenment, and spiritual awareness. would recommend to anyone who knows this life ain't the whole story. also anyone who needs a little reality check. Very entertaining reading.
Charles Stoll’s book Enigma takes you through life. The pitfalls and joys of growing up are brought out in vivid detail. Follow the main character as he matures and discovers his homosexuality. It’s not a quick read for enjoyment but a study, deep in your thought pattern.
This is a story you may want to read twice. The effect is so dramatic and so true that reading it only once leaves the reader deeply involved. He or she will beg for more. Perfectly written, it's a study in the inner mind of a young man who comes to terms with many things in life he never thought he could. He handles most with maturity while experiencing events few are prepared for. You'll laugh, you'll cry and I hope you understand its depth. Could be a classic.
